The challenge

The development of mining exploration projects in territories with the presence of rural and Indigenous communities requires a deep understanding of the social, cultural and territorial dynamics within the area of influence. For the Cobra Real, Concepción 1, Concepción 2 and Concepción 3 mining concessions, it was necessary to generate strategic social information to identify key stakeholders, analyze the social conditions of the territory and anticipate potential risks of conflict associated with mining activities. The challenge consisted of producing a robust social assessment that would serve as a basis for project decision-making, facilitating the planning of community engagement and the preventive management of social impacts.

Our intervention

Antroproyectos carried out a comprehensive social study aimed at characterizing the territorial context of the mining concessions. The work included a socio-historical analysis of the territory, the identification of relevant social stakeholders, data collection in communities within the area of influence, and the assessment of social sensitivity and risks associated with the development of the project.

Methodology

The research combined document review, fieldwork in local communities and territorial analysis using georeferencing tools and geographic information systems. The process enabled the mapping of human settlements, the identification of community infrastructure, the analysis of territorial social dynamics and the assessment of factors that could influence the relationship between the project and local communities.

Results

The project generated community assessments, social sensitivity analyses and territorial mapping of the area of influence of the mining concessions. These technical inputs enabled a deeper understanding of the social context of the territory, the identification of potential risks and the planning of community engagement strategies for the project.

What we did differently

Antroproyectos integrated social research, territorial analysis and geospatial tools to produce a deeper reading of the territory beyond conventional social studies. This approach made it possible to understand not only the community structure within the area of influence, but also the social dynamics that may influence the viability of the project, facilitating informed decisions and more effective engagement strategies.

Generated impact

The study enabled an understanding of the territory’s social dynamics and the anticipation of potential risks associated with the development of the mining project, generating strategic information for decision-making and facilitating the planning of more effective community engagement strategies.
